Choosing a Photographer

Below are just a few tips and questions when interviewing a photographer.

1. Style of Photography - What is the photographer’s style. Are they able to deliver in the style you like?

Editorial Style, Posed and structured, Natural light or strobe and flash

2. Do they have a portfolio of past work?

3. Does the photographer offer an Engagement Shoot?

Engagement shoots give you a chance to work with them and get to know them before your wedding.

4. Will the photographer visit the venue with you prior to your wedding day?

If the photographer has worked at your venue before, then they probably have a good knowledge of the area. If not, will they meet with you and your planner at the venue to scope out locations and establish meeting locations for photographs?

5. Does your photographer have backup equipment or a second photographer who will be shooting with them?

It is critical that the photographer have backup equipment. This includes backup cameras, batteries, flash, and memory cards. In the case of larger weddings and events, a second photographer may be needed.

6. Do they have a schedule of hours and prices?

7. How will they dress when photographing?

8. How are you going to receive your photographs? What is included?

9. Does your photographer offer prints, albums, etc..?

10. Will your photographer edit the photographs and retouch?

11. Who has the rights to the photographs?

Rights to photogaphs may remain with some photographers. Make sure you own the usage rights to your photographs.

12. Does your photographer offer storage and backup? For how long?
